As most of the film world is already aware, the viscous villain in Christopher Nolan‘s third and final Batman installment will be the brutal Bane, played by Tom Hardy. However, not everyone will recall the swirling number of rumors that were once passed around cyberspace, speculating about who might be the last adversary. The popular vote was, of course, The Riddler. Names such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Johnny Depp, Eddie Murphy, and even Neil Patrick Harris, were all circulating as potentials to fill the shoes. Here is a screenshot of IMDb from September of 2010.
Just yesterday, though, Batman-News.com‘s report on the July issue of Empire Magazine‘s most recent coverage of the upcoming summer blockbuster, The Dark Knight Rises, revealed new information. Apparently, Warner Bros. executives were also advocating for The Riddler and said “we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio…”.
It does not seem like there is any word on what was happening behind the scenes. Who wanted who? And, how close, if at all, did Dicaprio actually come to being a part of this franchise?
Perhaps, the world will never know.
